Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Coat Button - Inventory Number: BUT 335
The face features a raised image of a standing arm grasping a sword — the Massachusetts state seal motif — surrounded by the legend “MASS. VOLUNTEER MILITIA” in a circular border. The button appears to be a two-piece construction with a gilt brass finish.
The reverse shows the maker’s mark “SCOVILL MF’G CO / WATERBURY”, a well-known Connecticut manufacturer of military buttons during the 19th century. The handwritten label “Dogham / Chas. City” likely refers to Dogham Plantation in Charles City County, Virginia, indicating where the button was possibly recovered (likely a dug relic).
Comes housed in 5 x 6 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
