    Model 1842 Box Lock U.S. Navy Pistol - Inventory Number: HAN 193 / SOLD

    Model 1842 box lock pistol, one of 2,000 produced by Ames from 1842 to 1847. Round smoothbore barrel is .54 caliber and measures 6” long. Bore is dark with light pitting. The exterior surface of the barrel has a smooth, deep brown patina. Breech is marked: “USN / 1845 / RC / P”. Barrel is held to the stock by tang screw behind the breech and a single brass barrel band. The lock, hammer, and bolster have a deep brown patina. The lock is marked “N. P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS” and “USN / 1845”. The action is crisp and fully functional. The nipple is original and in good condition. The trigger guard, round butt plate, and barrel band are brass with a deep, rich patina. Stock is dark with numerous small dings and dents but is in overall good condition. The iron button type ramrod is attached at the muzzle by a swivel and operates properly. A classic U.S. Navy small arm.
