Civil War U.S. issued smooth side canteen. This example is the Philadelphia Depot style, as evident by the tiny lip on the pewter spout, lack of stopper chain hole on the strap loop, and twilled jean cloth cover. The cover is stenciled in black ink “C B D CO.E” Charles B. Drake enlisted in the 15th Connecticut Infantry in July 1862, and was discharged for disability in December 1862, shortly after the regiment’s involvement in the Battle of Fredericksburg. The canteen has an old replacement stopper and retains the original cloth sling, which has been torn on one spot. A well-used identified soldier’s canteen.
