Commercially produced Civil War forage cap, popular with officers and soldiers that preferred to wear a cap of higher quality that those issued by the government. This example has a squared brim bound with painted cloth, and the body is lined with padded black silk with a quilted crown lining. The body of the cap rises 4” at the front and is adorned with a false embroidered, stamped brass crossed cannon artillery insignia with most of the original gilt finish. The leather sweatband is crosshatched, light brown leather in good condition. The chinstrap remains in excellent condition with a rounded, stamped brass adjustment buckle, and is secured to the cap with two cuff-sized eagle “A” artillery buttons. The wool body has a wonderful rich blue color with some small moth nips scattered about, two of which have stitched repairs on the crown. A very attractive and well-made Civil War cap.
