Rare 1889 Civil War Veterans Certificate Third Army Corps Union Dr. Edwin B. Young, Assistant Surgeon, 11th NJ Volunteers - Inventory Number: DOC 384

An exceptional and visually rich lithographed membership certificate issued to Dr. Edwin B. Young, Assistant Surgeon of the 11th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, recognizing his election to the Third Army Corps Union — a prestigious post-war fraternal organization comprised of veterans who served in the Third Corps of the Army of the Potomac.

Dated August 24, 1889, this ornate certificate features dramatic engravings of Civil War battle scenes, camp life, artillery units, and cavalry, with U.S. flags proudly flanking both sides. Prominent battles such as Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Mine Run are named on the regimental banners. Lithographed by Hatch & Co., Trinity Building, 111 Broadway, N.Y., the piece is an outstanding example of postwar commemorative art and the memory culture of Union veterans.

Hand-signed by General Dan Sickles and the organization’s president and secretary, including Col. Edwin S. Linington, and printed on heavy paper, the certificate is beautifully preserved in a period oak frame.  Approximately 20” x 28”.

A significant and scarce artifact honoring a Civil War surgeon and his role in one of the Army of the Potomac’s hardest-fighting corps.
