    Rare CDV of John Harrison Surratt, Jr. - Inventory Number: CDV 511 / SOLD

    Rare CDV image of John Surratt, Confederate Spy and accused of plotting with John Wilkes Booth to kidnap President Abraham Lincoln.  This image was a period copy shot, undoubtedly sold at the time following the assassination as his name made world fame.

    He was also suspected of involvement in President Lincoln's assassination. He served as a Confederate Secret Service courier and spy. Dr. Samuel Mudd introduced Surratt to Booth on Dec. 23, 1864. After the assassination of Lincoln Surratt denied any involvement. When he learned of the assassination he fled to Montreal, Canada, travelling to various other countries, prior to his return to the U.S. in 1867. He was tried in connection with the assassination and found not guilty.
