Rare War of 1812 U.S. Cavalry Saber by Nathan Starr with Original Iron Scabbard - Inventory Number: SWO 313
An iconic early American cavalry saber manufactured by Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut, under contract for the U.S. government during the War of 1812. This regulation saber features a slightly curved single-edged blade measuring approximately 35 inches, with a broad fuller and distinct federal styling of the period. The blade bears the deeply stamped maker’s mark: “N. STARR” on the ricasso.
The hilt showcases a simple yet robust design with a one-piece iron stirrup guard, iron backstrap, and grooved wooden grip—originally leather-wrapped with twisted wire. Accompanied by its original iron scabbard with twin suspension rings and throat, showing honest wear, untouched patina, and expected age-related oxidation.
These sabers were the first standardized cavalry weapons produced in the United States, and this example represents one of the earliest martial arms manufactured for federal contract. An important and increasingly scarce piece of American military history, suitable for any advanced collection of early U.S. edged weapons or War of 1812 artifacts.
Condition: Very good for its age. Blade is smooth with age patina some blade nicking, markings are clear. Grip retains traces of its original wrap. Scabbard shows no major dents and has a great untouched surface finish throughout.
