South Carolina Hat Insignia

South Carolina Hat Insignia - Inventory Number: CON 581

A finely struck, stamped brass South Carolina hat insignia measuring about 3 inches tall. This still retains much of its gilt finish on its face with just the highest points showing wear, documenting use and enhancing aesthetic depth. The reverse retains almost all of the gilt as well as a pair of long brass pins affixed via lead, to affix it to a shako or hat.

This insignia is typical of the prewar militia insignia marketed by military goods dealers to volunteer companies who began to dramatically increase in number in the southern states as the war approached. This is an impressive insignia with the state’s Palmetto tree at center with two oblong shields resting against it bearing the state motto, and the date 1776 centered at its base as a reminder of independence. A very showy piece of military headgear insignia.
