Union Bullseye Canteen Battlefield Pick-Up from the Rorbach Farm Antietam MD - Inventory Number: CAN 194
The Rohrbach Farm—most notably the Rohrbach Bridge Farm—holds significant historical importance due to its proximity to one of the most iconic and pivotal sites on the Antietam Battlefield: Burnside’s Bridge.
The Rohrbach Farm sat near the southern part of the battlefield, close to the stone bridge that crossed Antietam Creek—known historically as Rohrbach’s Bridge, but later immortalized as Burnside’s Bridge after Union General Ambrose Burnside’s bloody attempts to seize it from entrenched Confederate forces on September 17, 1862.
The fighting at and around Burnside’s Bridge represented one of the most intense moments of the Battle of Antietam. Confederate troops from Georgia, under General Robert Toombs, held the high ground above the bridge and repulsed multiple Union assaults before finally being flanked and forced to withdraw.
Like many local families, the Rohrbachs were caught in the crossfire of the battle. Their home and farm were likely used for shelter, possibly as a field hospital, and the land was trampled and scarred by troops and artillery. Firsthand civilian accounts describe hiding in the cellar as bullets struck the house.
