U.S. Model 1816 Socket Bayonet with Original Scabbard – Inventory Number: BAY 286 / SOLD
A strong and complete example of a U.S. Model 1816 socket bayonet, complete with its original brass-tipped leather scabbard. This bayonet design was first adopted in the early 19th century and continued to see service into the American Civil War, especially among early-war state militias and units still armed with .69 caliber muskets.
The blade is clearly stamped “US” with inspectors mark beneath, indicating inspection and acceptance by a U.S. Ordnance Department official. The socket bears the rack number “21”, likely denoting a unit-issued number or weapon pairing—typical of militia or regimental-level inventory systems. Mortise type: T-slot.
