U.S. Civil War “Bullseye” Canteen – Tin Drum Style- Inventory Number: CAN 197
Original Union Army “bullseye” canteen, a classic example of the Model 1858 smoothside canteen with concentric reinforcing rings stamped into each face for added strength. Often referred to by collectors as a “bullseye” canteen, this form was widely issued during the American Civil War and carried by countless Union soldiers in the field.
Made of tinned iron with a soldered spout and three strap loops for a cloth sling, the canteen design balanced durability with lightweight construction. The concentric ring pattern helped prevent denting during rough campaign conditions. Many of these canteens were originally covered with wool or jean cloth and had a cork stopper, although this example shows the bare metal body, likely due to age and field use.
These canteens were essential gear for every infantryman, used to carry water on long marches and during battle. Their simple design and rugged construction made them iconic artifacts of the Civil War soldier’s experience.
