Vermont State Seal Coat Button - Inventory Number: BUT 320
Coat size uniform button for the state of ' Vermont. On the face is the classic Vermont state coat of arms. The seal of Vermont was designed in 1778. It depicts the wooded hills in the background representing the state's Green mountains and it has sheaves and cow to depict the state's agriculture. Above the seal it has the stag's head with "VERMONT" above that. In the ribbon below the coat of arms it has the state motto of "FREEDOM & UNITY" with 13 stars below that. The button has a fine look all over. The original back and shank is present with a nice, clear Civil War backmark of "*SCOVILL MFG. CO. * WATERBURY". This is the style listed as VT9 in Albert's button book and as VT230A6 in Tice's book. It is an original and attractive coat size Civil War Vermont uniform button.
Button card was de-accessed from the “The National Civil War Life Museum” of Fredericksburg, VA which featured thousands of items pertaining to the daily life of the Civil War Soldier and the era.
