Whitney Navy Percussion Revolver Serial No. 5154 - Inventory Number: HAN 362
This is a fine and well-preserved example of the Whitney Navy percussion revolver, serial number 5154, manufactured by Eli Whitney, Jr., of New Haven, Connecticut. This revolver represents the Second Model configuration, produced between 1861 and 1865, and chambered in .36 caliber with a six-shot cylinder. The revolver retains an attractive, even plum-brown patina over smooth metal surfaces, the coloration indicative of both age and careful preservation. All factory markings remain legible, with sharp edges on the frame and barrel flats. Mechanically sound, wlacking one screw on frame. The Whitney Navy was among the most widely purchased and privately acquired sidearms of the Civil War. While the U.S. Navy placed several direct orders, many were also sold commercially to officers and men of both Union and Confederate forces. Confederate purchases were facilitated through Southern agents prior to the full onset of hostilities, and captured examples saw service on both sides throughout the war. This revolver, with its pleasing patina, solid condition, and relatively low serial number, is a prime representative of one of the most important martial revolvers of the American Civil War. Condition: Smooth metal with attractive plum patina; markings crisp; mechanically functional. Lacking one screw.
