William Burnam Woods - Inventory Number: AUT 115
William Burnam Woods was born in Newark, Ohio on August 3, 1824 and was graduated from Western Reserve College in 1841; from there he went to Yale University graduating in 1845. He studied law in Ohio and was admitted to the bar in 1847. He was elected Mayor of Newark in 1855 and two years later elected to the Ohio House of Representatives where he was Speaker in 1858 and 1859. He joined the Army in 1861 as Lieutenant Colonel of the 76* Ohio Infantry until the close of the war when he was mustered out with the rank of Brigadier General and Brevet Major General of Volunteers. After the war he settled in Alabama and was active in the Reconstruction as State Chancellor for six years following which he was appointed as Circuit Judge. In 1880 President Hayes appointed him as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He died in Washington on May 14, 1887.
