Wonderful Cased Set of Civil War Field Binoculars - Inventory Number: MIS 248 / SOLD

This set was amongst the highest quality and most expensive sets available during the war. This example exhibits all of the warring features one would look for in a period pair. The japanned finish with leather covered body and articulating sunshades. The bridge area is symmetrical as required for wartime optics. This set is unique in for fact that there is a three-power knob for marine, field, and theater use, each adding a different power of magnification. The optics are excellent as well as the functionality of the adjustment post. These were made by the same firm in Paris which made General U.S. Grant’s pair as well as Robert E. Lee.
