Civil War Era Capital Amputation Saw – Marked “L. Weidler, Berlin” - Inventory Number: MED 297

Striking example of a mid-19th century capital amputation saw, bearing the maker’s mark “L. Weidler / Berlin” on the spine. L. Weidler was a known German surgical instrument maker whose tools were sometimes imported to the U.S. and used by military and civilian surgeons alike.

Polished steel bow-frame with curved profile, fixed blade with fine teeth, and a classic checkered ebony handle attached with brass pins. Excellent condition metal surface with light scattered age spots, firm and undamaged handle, and clear maker’s stamp.

This saw is representative of the surgical tools used during the Civil War for limb amputations in both field and hospital settings. An outstanding piece for display or inclusion in any Civil War medical or surgical collection.
