History: The 4th Ohio Cavalry was organized at Cincinnati, Lima, St. Mary’s and Camp Dennison, Ohio beginning in August 1861. They were mustered into U.S. service in November. On January 2, 1862 they saw their first action in Missouri. They were quickly moved back to Kentucky and for the remainder of the year they saw continual action in Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky including the Battle of Stones River. For most of 1863 the 4th participated in a continuing series of scouts and expeditions which resulted in numerous skirmishes. Their most notable service was the Battle of Chickamauga. The following year they were part of the battles and maneuvering of Sherman's Atlanta campaign. They returned to Nashville in September and proceeded to Louisville where they remained until January.

The regiment then moved to Gravelly Springs, Alabama and remained there until March 22 when they left as part of Wilson's cavalry raid. The 4th Ohio was mustered out July 15, 1865.
