This elegant, apothecary bottle is labeled “OL. THEOBR.”, denoting Oleum Theobromatis—cocoa butter oil. Used widely in historical medicine for its soothing and emollient properties, cocoa butter was a staple in both civilian and military pharmacies.
The bottle features a wide lip with a ground glass stopper and a vivid gold and black enameled label under glass. Apothecary jars like this were common in dispensaries, doctor’s offices, and chemist shops throughout the Civil War era.
