Broadside – Inventor of Gatling Gun - Inventory Number: DOC 361
Rare original 1844 advertising broadside printed at the Courier office in Zanesville, Ohio for R.J. Gatling. Mr. Gatling would later be famous for inventing the rapid-fire weapon that bears his name… the “Gatling Gun.” But here, in this earlier broadside he promotes an earlier invention. His seed planting harrow.
A major American inventor, Gatling started out by helping his father invent machinery to sow cotton seed and thin the plants. Here in this broadside Gatling extolls the benefits of drilling wheat instead of broadcast sowing. He states that using his seed planting harrow will increase yields. The broadside tells farmers to “Drill your Wheat” and save money.
The broadside is clean and all printing is crisp. Not only is the content interesting, but there is an impressive woodcut of a gentleman farmer across the top using Gatling’s invention and shows it being pulled by a strong steed. The quality of the broadside and the imposing artwork makes this a highly desirable piece of Americana.
This possibly unique surviving piece is in a custom archival frame and measures 36.00 x 29.50 inches.
