Civil War Sixth Corps First Division Badge – Wool Corp Badge - Inventory Number: INS 431 / SOLD
This is an original Civil War-era corps badge constructed from red wool in the distinctive Greek cross shape of the Union Sixth Army Corps. Hand-labeled “6th Corps, 1st Div.,” this example represents the First Division of the Sixth Corps, which served with distinction in numerous campaigns including Antietam, Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign.
Corps badges like this one were adopted in 1863 to help identify units on the battlefield and boost morale. Each corps used a unique shape, while divisions within a corps were distinguished by color—red signifying the First Division in this case. This badge features small holes at the top and bottom, likely for sewing or pinning to a cap or uniform.
A remarkable piece of Civil War history, this wool badge is a rare surviving example of personal identification used by Union soldiers in the field.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
