This authentic mid-19th century surgical amputation saw is a powerful and rare relic from the Civil War era. It features a finely serrated steel blade, a curved horn or composition grip handle, and is clearly stamped “GEMRIG PHILA,” identifying the respected medical instrument maker George Tiemann & Co., active in Philadelphia and frequently contracted to supply the Union Army with surgical tools.
These saws were indispensable in battlefield hospitals, where quick amputations were often the only option for survival. With its intact handle and sharp, jagged blade, this saw is a chilling yet vital reminder of the brutal realities of Civil War medicine.
