“Collecting the Dead for Burial at Gained Mill, several months after the fight.” - Inventory Number: ALB 282 / SOLD
This image was part of a G.A.R. Hall collection and was previously mounted to a relic board. This tragic view shows the skeletal remains of Union soldiers and their clothing piled on a stretcher. Two men in the distance collect remains of the dead on a battlefield months after the battle near Cold Harbor, Virginia
The battle took place on June 27, 1862, in Hanover County, Virginia, as the third of the Seven Days Battles which together decided the outcome of the Union’s Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War 2. The battle was fought between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee, and the Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George B. McClellan. The Confederates won the battle, which resulted in the Union army retreating from the doorsteps of Richmond.
