    WATERVLIET ARSENAL

    1864.

Compact paper-wrapped box contains six paper cartridges and seven percussion caps, meant for use with the Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver—one of the most widely issued sidearms to Union troops during the Civil War. The inclusion of an extra cap accounted for possible misfires, a common issue at the time. Manufactured by the Watervliet Arsenal, located in New York, this arsenal played a significant role in producing munitions and ordnance supplies for the Union Army. Cartridge boxes like this one were essential for keeping ammunition organized, dry, and ready for quick reloading in combat.

Today, intact examples of Civil War cartridge boxes—especially dated and arsenal-marked like this—are highly collectible and valued by historians, collectors, and museums alike.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
