Confederate Boyle, Gamble, and MacFee Foot Officer’s Sword, Identification Badge, and Militia Commission of Canaan Lawrence 54th Virginia Infantry C.S.A. Veteran of Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and the Atlanta Campaign - Inventory Number: CON 356 / SOLD
Confederate foot officer’s sword manufactured by Boyle, Gamble, and MacFee of Richmond, Virginia. The sword was carried by Canaan Lawrence, who enlisted in October 1861 as a sergeant in the 54th Virginia Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in early 1863, the rank he held when he fought with the 54th at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and numerous battles throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Lawrence’s sword is a minimalist style with two-branch, sand-cast brass guard which has mellowed to a faint, light green patina. The grip retains the original leather in very good condition, wrapped with twisted brass wire. The nearly straight blade measures 30 ¼” with an unstopped fuller and light gray patina, with a few small spots of light rust. About 75% of the leather scabbard remains, which has an old, stitched repair along the seam, and the scabbard retains one brass hanger.
The accompanying silver shield pendant measures approximately 1” in width with a droop wing eagle holding scroll in its beak, stamped “C. LAWRENCE. RINER. VA.”
The grouping includes the framed Commonwealth of Virginia commission of Canaan Lawrence dated 1866, appointing him Major of the post war 43rd Regiment of the 26th Brigade and 5th Division of the Virginia Militia, signed by Reconstruction Governor Francis Harrison Pierpont and Adjutant General William H. Richardson. The framed document measures approximately 11 ½” by 9 ½” and remains in very good condition.
Canaan Lawrence’s funeral card with his death date of March 7, 1905 at the age of 64 is printed in gold ink on black cardboard measuring 6 ½” by 4 ¼”, with a crease across the upper right corner.
This is a fabulous grouping from an Army of Tennessee Confederate officer.
