Bore time letter of general, Byron M. Thomas thanking a woman for the gift of tobacco and its comfort during the time of war.

    Montgomery, Alabama, November 15, 1863

Miss Goodwin on my arrival here yesterday from a short visit to Georgia, I received your note containing the handsome present of a beautiful tobacco bag, for which I tender, my sincerest, thanks and shall always treasure it up with the warmest sentiments of friendship and esteem for the Fair donor. Well puffing the “weed “rendered so fragrant and delightful by so happy and assertion. I shall always forget the horrors of the war and indulge only in the services of the happy scenes and pleasures of bygone days or joyful anticipation looked forward to a bright and glorious future. You know, I have always have regarded my pipe and Its accessories as the first substitute for a wife and now that you have fitted me up so handsomely, I certainly shall bid for well to all gloom and despondency, and be comparatively, (only comparatively, for I have not say to you that the substitute is perfect) a happy man. Except I have again for your beautiful present the warmest thanks of your true friend. B. M. Thomas.
