Confederate States of America $500 Bond – February 20, 1863 Issue -
Inventory Number: CON 607A striking example of Confederate fiscal history, this $500 CSA bond, issued under the Act of Congress, C.S.A., February 20, 1863, features a portrait of Christopher G. Memminger, the first Confederate Secretary of the Treasury.
Printed with elegant typography and intricate engraving, the bond promises an 8% interest rate, paid semiannually. The date at top, July 1st, 1868, reflects the maturity schedule of the bond, though the Confederate States were of course defunct by that time.
Bond number: 72371. Includes 7 of the original 10 twenty-dollar interest coupons, each marked “C.S. Loan, Feb. 20, 1863”. Excellent condition with sharp contrast and clear printing. Printed by: Evans & Cogswell (noted Confederate printers in Columbia, SC)
Confederate bonds were both a financial necessity and a propaganda tool during the Civil War. Today, they are sought after as symbolic remnants of the South’s failed war finance efforts and as classic examples of 19th-century engraving.
Comes housed in 14 x 20 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
