Excavated Enlistedman’s Shoulder Scales from Falmouth, Virginia  - Inventory Number: REL 080 / SOLD

Union Civil War soldiers went to the front decorated with brass scales on their shoulders as part of their dress uniforms. They were intended to ward off the blows of sabers by cavalrymen. It is doubtful they ever served such a purpose, and they were frequently discarded by soldiers as an impediment. This complete pair was excavated in Falmouth, Virginia, site of the Army of the Potomac’s encampment during the winter of 1862-1863. They are in excellent relic condition with the attachment device missing from one scale. Such complete examples are rarely dug today.
