Fine Mid-19th Century Engraved Percussion Boxlock Muff Pistol English – ca. 1840–1860 – .44 Caliber - Inventory Number: HAN 336
A handsome and well-crafted example of a gentleman’s or lady’s personal defense pistol from the mid-19th century. This single-shot percussion muff pistol features a robust .44 caliber smoothbore barrel and elegant scroll engraving to both sides of the boxlock frame. The engraved motifs retain crisp detail and typify the refined English aesthetic of the period.
The pistol is fitted with a richly patinated walnut grip, shaped in the traditional saw-handle form and exhibiting attractive natural figuring. The turn-off barrel measures approximately 2.75” and is engraved with a delicate border at the muzzle. It retains a dark gray patina consistent with age. A folding (drop) trigger mechanism remains intact and functional, extending automatically when cocked—a hallmark of quality pocket pistols of the era.
Compact yet powerful, this style of muff pistol was commonly carried for personal protection and favored for its concealability. Likely produced in Birmingham or London, this example stands out for its large bore, fine engraving, and overall honest condition.
