Gettysburg Battlefield Recovered Model 1855 Rifle Musket – Springfield Armory – Inventory Number: GET 528

This historically significant Model 1855 U.S. Rifle Musket was recovered from the field following the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most pivotal and devastating engagements of the American Civil War. Marked “Springfield” and dated 1860, this .58 caliber rifled musket was later acquired by the Lee’s Headquarters Museum in Gettysburg and remained in their collection for years before being sold to well-known Civil War collector George Gorman, active in the 1940s–1950s.

This example is a very early battlefield pickup and remains in original, unaltered condition. It retains its original rear sight, ramrod, and bayonet, with deeply struck lockplate markings and visible U.S. military proof marks. The stock shows honest weathering and use, consistent with battlefield exposure.

    Provenance includes:

    • Lee’s Headquarters Museum, Gettysburg, PA

    • George Gorman Collection (prominent mid-20th century Civil War dealer)

    • Accompanied by documentation and display tags confirming origin and history

A true museum-grade artifact with documented Gettysburg battlefield recovery and established provenance—an exceedingly scarce opportunity for serious collectors of Civil War weaponry and relics.
