Confederate cavalry general (1824-1864) killed while leading a charge against a superior attacking force at the Battle of Piedmont. Manuscript DS signed “W. E. Jones,” one page, A RARE CONFEDERATE AUTOGRAPH, "Grumble" Jones served on the Texas frontier for nine years following his graduation from West Point in 1848. He resigned in 1857 but enlisted with the Confederate Army in 1861, and fought at Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Gettysburg, and the deadly Virginia theatre in spring 1864, when he was killed at Piedmont on 5 June.
