Model 1865 Spencer Repeating Carbine Low Serial Number “5,273” - Inventory Number: RIF 184 / SOLD
A very good condition Model 1865 Spencer Repeating Carbine, one of the nicer we have seen in some time.
The Spencer factory manufactured nearly 23,000 M1865 Spencer carbines, of which 12,502 were equipped with the Stabler cut-off. In the post-war period, Springfield Armory retrofitted about 12,000 M1860s to incorporate M1865 features. The .56-50-cal. M1865 Spencer carbines manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co. and the Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces with 20-inch barrels, and they had an overall length of 37 inches.
A pleasing mottled plumb/gray colored patina rests on the frame and receiver while stamped on top of the frame is a readable maker’s mark of “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS. / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860.” Action works well. Hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls when trigger is squeezed. Magazine tube in the butt also seats and unseats properly.
Carbine has a two-piece walnut stock in very good condition. There are no cracks. Original fore-end is tight and strong and exhibits normal wear. Left side of wrist has saddle bar and out of round iron ring.
Serial #5,273 is at the rear of the frame near the hammer. Lock screws are original with no buggering. The iron butt plate is tight and wears a mottled dark plum / gray coloring.
This M1865 Spencer carbine is an excellent addition to highlight any military equestrian display or weapons collection.
