Near Mint Model 1836 Flintlock Horse Pistol – Johnson, Dated 1841 - Inventory Number: HAN 354 / SOLD
An exceptional and scarce example of the U.S. Model 1836 Flintlock Horse Pistol, manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut, and dated 1841. This pistol remains in its original flintlock configuration, making it a highly desirable survivor of pre-Mexican War U.S. martial arms in remarkably preserved condition.
The pistol features a smooth, .54 caliber round barrel with a bright, untouched surface and sharp “US / JH / P” inspection marks at the breech. The lockplate is crisply marked “U.S. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN CONN / 1841”, all deeply struck and exceptionally clear.
The walnut stock is superb, retaining sharp edges, a rich natural finish, and deep, vivid inspector’s cartouches on the left flat, including a bold “JH” (John Harris) and a crisp “WAT” (William A. Thornton), denoting government inspection and acceptance.
All metal components remain in near mint condition, with smooth steel surfaces and a consistent, original finish. The brass flash pan, original frizzen, cock, and all small parts are present and correctly fitted, showing no signs of alteration or reconversion—confirming its status as an original flintlock.
The Model 1836 was the last U.S. flintlock pistol produced in quantity, and many were later converted to percussion for Civil War use, making original flintlock examples in near mint condition exceedingly rare.
A superb and investment-grade example of early 19th-century American military arms, suitable for the most advanced collection.
