Philadelphia Manufactured 1858 Bull’s-Eye Canteen Excellent Example - Inventory Number: CAN 205

Manufactured by Hayden, Booth & Porter A superb and well-preserved specimen of the U.S. Model 1858 “bull’s-eye” pattern canteen, produced by the Philadelphia firm of Hayden, Booth & Porter. Constructed of tinned sheet iron with concentric reinforcing rings to each face, this pattern was designed to add strength and reduce denting in service. This example retains its original spout, with clear manufacturer’s stamping, and the body remains in exceptional condition for its age, showing only light service wear. Hayden, Booth & Porter was one of several Philadelphia contractors supplying these canteens to the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Their production is notable for the crispness of the stamping and the quality of materials used. The bull’s-eye pattern was widely carried by Union soldiers in all theaters of the war, its distinctive ringed design becoming one of the most recognized accoutrements of the Federal infantryman. This canteen’s excellent preservation, clear markings, and solid body make it a standout example for advanced Civil War accoutrement collections. Condition: Body tight and free from major dents; seams secure; spout with clear “HAYDEN, BOOTH & PORTER” stamping; overall an outstanding representative of a classic Union-issued field canteen.
