Description
1840 Model Heavy Cavalry Saber (“Wrist Breaker”)
This classic Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber was manufactured in Philadelphia and remains in exceptionally fine condition. The blade retains a bright finish with only minimal peppering and features the distinctive flat-backed profile that earned these swords the nickname “Wrist Breakers.” The left ricasso is clearly stamped “Sheble & Fisher, Philada.”
The brass guard and pommel cap have developed an attractive dark brown patina with scattered lighter highlights on both the guard and pommel. The underside of the pommel cap is stamped with the numeral 10, matching the number found on the scabbard drag, indicating the sword and scabbard have remained together as a set.
The leather grip remains intact, retaining its original leather covering and twisted wire wrap. The leather blade washer at the guard is also still present. Evidence of hard military service can be seen in the hilt, which has shifted slightly rearward on the tang over time, causing the end of the tang to sit just below the surface of the pommel cap rather than flush with it.
The matching steel scabbard carries a deep, untouched brown patina and is stamped with the number 10 on the drag, corresponding to the marking on the pommel cap. This matching-numbered configuration adds to the desirability of the piece.
An attractive and complete example of the iconic Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, this sword displays the rugged character and substantial construction that made the “Wrist Breaker” one of the most recognizable American military swords of the 19th century. A fine addition to any Civil War, cavalry, or American military arms collection.
