Description
1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar – New Orleans CS
1861 United States Seated Liberty Half Dollar, struck in silver at the opening of the American Civil War. The reverse features the Federal eagle with shield, clutching arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and denomination HALF DOL.
Silver half dollars were a major component of everyday commerce in the mid-19th century and would have been commonly handled by soldiers, civilians, merchants, and sutlers during the Civil War. Coins dated 1861 are particularly evocative, having circulated at the very moment the nation descended into conflict.
A strong addition to any Civil War–era coin collection, soldier grouping, or historical display, offering a tangible connection to daily life at the outbreak of the war.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
