Civil War Hardtack Crate Rhode Island Aerated Bread Company – Inventory Number:  MIS 176 / SOLD Extremely rare Civil War hardtack crate, manufactured by the Rhode Island Aerated Bread Company of Providence.  The crate is made from ½” thick boards and measures 18” by 14” by 11” and is stenciled on three sides with the manufacturers name and is complete with the original lid.  After hardtack was issued to soldiers in camp and field, the crates made convenient firewood and very few crates exist today.
