Folding Wooden Chess & Checkers Board

 

Early folding wooden chess and checkers board measuring 10¼ x 10¼ inches, crafted from alternating light and dark wood squares with warm, aged patina. The slatted design is linen-backed for flexibility. The reverse retains its original brown cloth backing, showing light fraying and honest wear from age and use and was possibly used as a writing desk.

 

Compact and portable, this form of board was favored by soldiers, offering recreation that could be easily carried or stored. When folded, it forms a tidy rectangular case ideal for pack or drawer.

 

A handsome example of 19th-century craftsmanship—simple, utilitarian, and full of period charm. Perfect for display with personal effects or Civil War–era camp items.
