Identified to Lt. Henry J. Hammond – 1862
Original wartime roll book used by Company H, 87th Pennsylvania Volunteers, with period inscription:
“Lieut. H. J. Hammond’s Book – Oct. 19th, 1862.”
Contains alphabetical listings and duty notations for dozens of soldiers in the company.
Includes extensive soldier lists and duty notations, along with a remarkable group of original loose documents found untouched inside the volume, including handwritten notes, tally sheets, a pressed leaves and flowers, newspaper clipping, and period receipts or scrip. These items represent the working paperwork of a Civil War company officer.
The 87th Pennsylvania fought at Second Winchester, Gettysburg (Culp’s Hill), Monocacy, Opequon, Fisher’s Hill, Cedar Creek, and in the Overland Campaign and Siege of Petersburg.
